US household wealth falls in third quarter

U.S. household wealth fell in the third quarter, pulled down by a drop in the value of stocks which more than offset a half-trillion rise in the value of property prices.

  • Household net worth fell about 1% in the period from July through September.
  • The value of holdings of real estate increased $500 billion, while equity values declined $1.7 trillion.
